You Can Do Anything Better Than Me (Five Minute Friday)

I didn't think I'd have time to write for Five Minute Friday this week, which is amusing because it's just five minutes, right?  But when I saw that the prompt is doubt, I knew I had to go for it.

Do you know about the four temperaments?

I am undoubtedly classified as melancholic.  The short description is this:  "Melancholic people are emotionally sensitive, perfectionistic introverts."

That pretty much says it.  Both "emotionally sensitive" and "perfectionistic" play into self-doubt.  Last week, during an icebreaker exercise, group members were asked to list three things we're really good at.  Any idea how hard that is for someone with a melancholic temperament?

Well, I like to bake, but I know people who are better than I am.  I like to write, but I know a lot of people who are better than I am.

The leader of the activity changed the question to "List three things you like to do," and that I can answer.

But I am often doubting myself.  I second-guess my decisions and I question my abilities.  "Is it good enough?" is often in my mind, and it's hard to say Yes, it's good enough!

I forget which show it's from, but I know a show tune that goes, "Anything you can do, I can do better.  I can do anything better than you."  I don't think anyone with a melancholic temperament has ever said that!

If you feel like taking the Four Temperaments test and you're willing to share your result in the comments, I'd love to hear it!  Have a blessed weekend!

  1. I'm a melancholic too....and have many of the same 'issues'.....definitely also don't like blowing my own trumpet but am learning, through His guidance, that it's kind of OK to shine a light, to be a beacon, to flourish in the talents we have been given. That doing so is giving glory to Him. Helen {A FMF friend}

  2. It would not surprise me to discover that there are people who struggle with self-doubt which come from any of the four temperaments. May we each embrace the talents God has developed in us & do them with all our heart. It is then, He will make something better of them than we ever imagined. Glad we were neighbors this week at FMF. Have a wonderful weekend!

  3. Now I have that song in my head! :)
    I know it would be hard to come up with things for me to say I'm good at, but I also can list things I enjoy :)

  4. Wow! Such a struggle! I pray we see God as our completion and others as inspiration not competition.
    Thank you for your transparency and sincerity
    God Bless

  5. Hi Melissa. I took the temperament test and got phlegmatic/melancholic. As I read the result I nodded along - yes that's me! I guess it's pretty accurate. But our character (and natural temperament) are not set in stone. As Christians, we are developing Christ-like character day by day as we surrender our lives to Him. And He can choose to call us into things we feel ill-equipped for unless we see that our full enabling comes from Him.
    May you find your faith in God growing strong and your doubts about yourself weakening over time as you rest in His amazing grace and unconditional love. God bless you. :) x

  6. Hi Melissa, I took the temperament test. I was phlegmatic-sanguine. I was a little surprised. But after I thought about my comfort zone or the state/situations I prefer, I guess I am phlegamatic-sanguine. I understood the mixture better. There is a difference between how I am perceived and the situations I am have been faced with. I need to trust God to handle many situations more. I struggle with stress and anxiety; I feel I must do more than I should, and keep the peace. I have performance anxiety; where I have to keep doing good or perform at least as well as the last time. I need to leave or turnover more to God at the beginning, not later on when I reach a level of distress. Actually I am causing my own stress.
