I've heard it said that it's impossible to be stagnant in the Christian faith:  if you're not moving forward, you're moving backward.  For me that's pretty convicting!

Right now I'm working on four studies:   Proverbs (Sunday school), 1 Peter (small group), John (women's Bible study), and discipleship (on my own).  I feel as though I'm learning, growing, and moving forward.

However, I've never studied so much in the past, and I've had times when I "didn't have time" to spend in the Word.  (Shhh ... keep that to yourself, okay?)  I was definitely sliding backward at those times.

The dangerous thing is this.  I can get started with moving forward and quickly gain momentum.  Moving backward is usually a gradual process.  I miss one day of spending time with God.  Then I miss another, then another.  It's a slow drift, and sometimes I don't even notice it happening.  One day something makes me notice just how large the gap between God and me has gotten.

I doubt that I'm the only one who has experienced this.  Have you?  Are you moving forward or backward?

STOP

PS:  If you are participating in the 31 Day / Five Minute challenge and your blog runs on WordPress, I have probably tried to leave a comment in the past two days.  For some reason those comments just disappear when I click Post.  I'm trying to resolve the problem!

  1. I'm definitely moving forward :), but I, too, have had my quiet slides backwards. Isn't it crazy how we let life interrupt our most important relationship? FYI, your comments have shown up on my WP site, and I really appreciate them! Hugs to you this day!

  2. I definitely moving forward. Truthfully, I feel I have no choice. With this chronic disease I have that doesn't have a cure, requires me to move. When I don't I feel ill, lonely, and out of touch with God and my fellow Christrians that I know. I feel useless and a burden. So I must read God's word, study, meditate, pray, sing, laugh, cry but reading and sharing how God and his Word impacts me, is crucial for every day existence. I feel terrific if I am used in a way that would delight God. So I am in agreement with you all. God Bless!💒

  3. Love this, Melissa! Sometimes I feel like my faith is growing more than I can handle, and then God somehow shows me a glimpse of his plan and it is so peace-giving. I'm so happy you've decided to join in the 31 days fun :)

  4. Those gradual steps backwards can really sneak in there! My hardest time for this in the summer when most of my bible studies take a break. It's so important to not take a break from God.

  5. I know what you mean..... It does sneak up on you.. but the fact that you notice and start to move forward is a great thing... You take notice and change... and that is where we are right now in our house...
