Getting Away - 31 Days

Almost halfway through our 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes.  I have to say that I have mixed feelings about that.  Some days writing is pure joy, and other days I feel devoid of ideas.

The writing prompt for today is AWAY.

START

Like so many other couples, my husband and I spent our honeymoon at Disney World.  (I think it's the one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in the United States.)  I hadn't been there since I was ten or twelve, and of course, since we were newlyweds, it was a wonderful time.

Since then we've gone back several times, starting when our son was two.  We'd said that we wouldn't take him until he was five, but we couldn't wait.  It turned out to be a fabulous trip, because his eyes were open wide with wonder.  His first character meeting was with Tigger.  He walked into the room, hesitated for just a moment, then ran over and started bouncing with Tigger.  So, so precious.

Our favorite view at our favorite hotel!
In the last few years, though, travel has been getting more stressful for me.  The packing of clothes is easier, because my almost-17-year-old now packs his own suitcase.  It doesn't help that we take every over-the-counter medication we might possibly need (pain relievers, cold medications, allergy medications...).  My prescription meds alone take more than half an hour to pack.  (Last time I ran out of the one most crucial medication.  We found a pharmacy that delivered to the hotel, but we certainly paid a premium price for that.)

So if it's not the packing, what is it?  I think part of it is breaking routine.  I like to wake up, start the laundry, have my coffee, check my email.  I like the daily routine and the comfort of home.  Being away, even somewhere fun, is still a source of stress.

What about you?  Are you happier at home or away?

STOP

  1. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE a vacation, but I have to tell you, nothing beats coming home to your own bed! Maybe it's because I'm in the throws of early motherhood, but the notion of breaking the monotony of wake up, care for everyone around you, go to sleep sounds amazing right now!

  2. I LOVE to travel ;)
I would do it all the time if I could... I just need to learn to pack better... I try to pack everything we might possibly need... and that is not always the best thing to do!
