Help Me and Thank You

Singer-songwriter Jason Gray has a song called "Help Me, Thank You."  He says the song was inspired by a quote from Anne Lamott, who says that the two best prayers she knows are "Help me, help me, help me" and "Thank you, thank you, thank you."  By quoting this I am not suggesting that I agree with everything Lamott says.  I do have to agree with her about the two best prayers, though.

I've certainly had times of praying "Help me, help me, help me."  Now I'm trying to really focus on the "Thank You."  After I get past the obvious (thanking God for my husband, our son, and so on), it takes a little more thought.

Off the top of my head ...

  • Most of all, I'm thankful for the Lord's mercy and grace, which have allowed me eternal life.
  • I'm thankful that my husband has a good job, through which God provides for us.
  • I'm thankful for our church family and its leadership.  Especially our pastor, who might read this. :)
  • I'm thankful to have a warm house, especially on cold rainy days like today.
  • I'm thankful that God created cocoa beans, coffee, and strawberries.
  • I'm thankful for the ability to read and write, and all the opportunities that come with those.
  • I'm thankful for carnations and hyacinths.
  • I'm thankful for music and the people who are gifted to bring good music to us.
  • I'm thankful for the freedom and the opportunity to homeschool.
  • I'm thankful for my doctors, whose knowledge and experience have enabled me to get back to a more normal life.
I could go on, but you get the idea.  Some people call these God sightings, explained by one blogger like this:  God comes to us throughout our ordinary lives, invisible unless we have learned how to look.  True, yes?  It's so easy to look right through these blessings, because maybe they aren't individually spectacular or because we get accustomed to having them.  But if we do, we miss out on these gifts from God--and we overlook just how generous and creative He is.

What are you thanking God for?
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
His love endures forever.
(Ps. 136:1)

  1. I have to use those prayers a lot myself. :) Listening to the song now...Jason Gray gets it right in so much of his music. Thanks for sharing him!

  2. How true that we often "overlook just how generous and creative He is" when we don't look for His blessings. I love the prayers and songs, too. Thank you!

  3. I am so thankful for Marc and his job... and for Broxton - his school, teachers and coaches. Each night when we go to bed, I ask Broxton to take a minute to think of things he is thankful for.

  4. This was good timing. Sometimes, think I don't pray specifically enough. Help and thank you are pretty important and I'm pretty sure God fills in the blanks we leave. Your thankful list is beautiful!
