Good Role Models: got milk?

How do you model good decision-making for your children?  How did your mom model it for you?

I think it's important for children to have good role models in all areas of life, but today let's talk about food.

When I was growing up, I learned that no food was absolutely off-limits.  We had treats like cake, cookies, and potato chips ... in moderation.  We had fruit far more often than we had cookies!

As a young adult--on my own--I broke every food "rule" by having candy bars for breakfast.  I've never lost my sweet tooth, but over time I settled back into the pattern I'd learned in my childhood.  Now, like my mom did for me, I have tried to impress the idea of moderation upon my son.

When we do have sweet treats, there's no better accompaniment than a tall glass of cold milk.  But my family drinks gallons of milk every week.  My 13-year-old consumes more milk than anyone else here:  he drinks glass after glass with nearly every meal!  My morning coffee usually contains more milk than coffee.  We all drink milk after dinner, whether or not we're having dessert.  And we eat plenty of other dairy products:  yogurt, cheese, ice cream ...

The National Milk Mustache got milk? Campaign has a fun new interactive section on their Facebook page.  Not only can you read about the ways that moms influence their daughters' health, weight, and self-image--but you can also watch a video about moms, find recipes, or send a personalized e-postcard (including your very own Milk Mustache picture!).  'Like' the page to be sure you can access all available features.
