City on Our Knees (Book Review)

City on Our Knees ... offers stories of people who have stepped across lines. Lines of discrimination, persecution, doubt, prejudice, pride, bitterness, self-isolation, and despair. ... [Just] one person, or one small group, can be a mechanism for change. God can use us right here. Right now. All we need is faith that He has our best in mind. And believe me—He does.

New from Grammy Award-winning singer/producer/songwriter TobyMac, City on Our Knees is a collection of inspiring stories and prayers.  The book is divided into four sections:
  • If We Gotta Start Sometime, Why Not Now? / Step Across the Line
  • Two Worlds Collide / Out of the Comfort Zone ... and Into the Light
  • We Are One Choice From Together / We Are Family
  • Through the Fog There is Hope in the Distance / Hope is Just a Prayer Away
If you know the TobyMac song "City on Our Knees," those section titles and subtitles may sound familiar.  Each section contains about ten stories:  some contemporary, some older; some about well-known people and some about people whose names you've probably never heard.

All of the stories tell about people who stepped out of their comfort zones to help someone in need.  They're stories of hope and faith--and evidence that just one person can make a difference in the world.

City on Our Knees could be a quick read (once I started reading, I didn't want to put it down).  But you may want to take your time and let your soul soak up the inspiration in these stories.  Author TobyMac is clear about his reason for writing the book, as he ends the preface with these words:  I hope these stories will inspire you to create a story of your own.
