Tree Top: America's Secret Ingredient Recipe Contest

I've heard about substituting applesauce for butter or oil in recipes, but I was always skeptical.  Thanks to Tree Top and Mom Central, I had an extra incentive to give it a try.

I had some overripe bananas and leftover buttermilk on hand, so I decided to bake Buttermilk Banana Bread, but with the substitution of Tree Top applesauce for the butter.  From what I've read about the nutrition facts for butter, that replaces about 800 calories from the butter with 70 calories from the applesauce.  The banana bread was slightly sweeter (not surprisingly), just as moist, and nearly as tender, when compared to the original recipe.  As written, this recipe is slightly less sweet than most banana bread; with another recipe I might reduce the sugar a bit to compensate for the sweetness of the applesauce.

I sneaked a taste of the applesauce before I added it to the recipe.  It was delicious!  I like that it's sweetened with apple juice concentrate rather than sugar or corn syrup, and that it's fortified with Vitamin C.

Mooseman and I also tried the Tree Top 3 Apple Blend Juice.  It's fresh-pressed, not from concentrate, with no added sugar.  The 3-apple blend results in a taste that's not quite as sweet as most apple juice.  Mooseman said it's the best apple juice he's ever had.  I liked it, too, and I'm happy that it's low in sodium and rich in potassium.

This year Tree Top is celebrating their 50th Anniversary with a special contest:  America's Secret Ingredient Recipe ContestClick through to read all about the great prizes you can enter to win!  You can also find lots of recipes at the Tree Top website.

Disclosure:  I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Tree Top and received products necessary to facilitate my candid review. In addition, I received a gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate.

  2. I love using applesauce in recipes instead of butter. It works much better than butter now that I live at altitude and too high of a fat content can cause cake to fall.
