Thankful Thursday: Hope

Often our pastor will ask the congregation what we're thankful for.  I'm much too shy to say it out loud, but in my head I'm practically shouting:  "Thank You, God, for hope!"  Because, without hope, what do we really have?

As I'm writing this (on Monday), the Bible Gateway Verse of the Day is Romans 12:2: "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." That's a lot of meaning packed into just ten words.

Over the weekend I was struggling with something, and I remembered this (Psalm 71:20), which a friend had read to me at another difficult time:
Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter,
you will restore my life again;
from the depths of the earth
you will again bring me up.
If that's not holding on to God's promise, I don't know what is.  The book of Psalms has many references to hope, but Romans 15:13 has become one of my favorite verses:
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Even in the darkest times, when I've stumbled and I can't see even one step ahead of me, I still have hope.  When my emotions falter and I don't feel the presence of God, I have the assurance that He is still with me and He is faithful to keep His promises.  I know that I can trust in Him and His Word.  I can "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer."

I am far from perfect, and I don't always get it right.  But I know that I can trust God and His promises infinitely more than I can trust my own emotions.  In the well-known words of John Newton:
The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.
And for that, I am very thankful.

  3. Wonderful post, Im sharing on my blog 365 day devotionals for women from the book Hopeful Heart. We live in a world where hope is often short supply, in todays world. But when we focus on Gods promises thats in His word, we find that hope can and should belong to all people who are wise enough to entrust all in God.

  5. Thanks for posting this. Sometimes what we feel is far from what is. There are time that I do not feel like I have hope. I struggle with truth vs. lies and so I always think in my head "there is no hope". but if listen closely and shut down my own thoughts for just a second, I can hear the truth that God is full of hope and He loves me and He never leaves me. That is a confidence that cannot be shaken. Thank you for your words of truth!
