Melba Snacks: Review and Sweepstakes

I don't think I'd tasted Melba toast since I was a kid, until I had the chance to try these new Melba Snacks from Old London.  I'm so glad I had a reason to try them again!

We tried two varieties:  Sea Salt and Spicy 3 Pepper.  (There are six varieties in all, including Roasted Garlic, White Cheddar, Whole Grain, and Sesame.)  First we tasted them right out of the box.  We liked the crunchiness and the lightly salted flavor.  The flavor and texture remind me of bagel chips, but with less salt and less fat.  (Don't get me wrong:  I'm a fan of bagel chips, but sometimes we want a healthier choice that still tastes good.)  The Spicy 3 Pepper isn't overly spicy; if you're lukewarm about spicy foods, I wouldn't be concerned about these being too spicy.

After reading a recipe for Tuna Classic on the Old London website, I decided to try my standard tuna salad on Melba Snacks.  I really liked it.  Whenever I have a sandwich, I crave chips or pretzels for the crunchiness; when I used Melba Snacks instead of bread, that crunch was right there.  And, at 50 calories per serving (four pieces), these are lower in calories than the bread I would have used.

Then I decided to try a flavor combination from the Melba Snacks recipe page.  Although the Lemon Meringue Tarts look fun and cute, I tried a variation of the Chocolate Pistachio Crunch.  (I made a substitution because I had peanuts, not pistachios, on hand.)  The combination of chocolate and peanut flavors with a little saltiness and a lot of crunchiness was--not surprisingly--very good.

Right now, Old London is giving away a trip to Hollywood through the Dance Your Way to Hollywood sweepstakes.  Here's a brief description:
Dance Your Way to Hollywood” will send one lucky winner and a guest to Tinseltown for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, including private dance lessons and tickets to watch the taping of a highly popular television show. The four-day, three-night, all-expenses-paid experience includes air travel and accommodations at a popular Hollywood hotel. Sweepstakes entries accepted March 17 through June 30, 2010.
So polish your dancing shoes ... but enter the sweepstakes first! :)

Disclosure:  I wrote this review while participating in a blog campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Old London Melba Toast and received a sample to facilitate my candid review. Mom Central sent me a gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate.
