Several years ago, I was able to keep track of all my passwords on a single scrap of paper. After a while, though, I had at least ten sheets of paper, each with at least a dozen usernames and passwords. I'm sure that some of my gray hairs resulted from trying to find a specific password on those scribbled sheets! Something had to be done.
I thought about using an inexpensive (free or dollar-store) address book. It seemed kind of limiting, though, so I wanted another system. This is what I came up with:
I purchased a dollar-store stack of multi-colored 3x5 index cards. I went through my password lists and made an index card for each website. Mine are color-coded:
I purchased a dollar-store stack of multi-colored 3x5 index cards. I went through my password lists and made an index card for each website. Mine are color-coded:
- store websites: pink cards
- manufacturer websites: yellow cards
- memberships (eBay, YouTube, MyPoints, etc.): green cards
- important websites (health insurance, credit accounts, etc.): blue cards
This is a really great, practical suggestion. I'm up to my ears as well. Thanks for the tip!
ReplyDeleteThis really, truly is great advice! I have so many variations on my "usual" passwords, I cuold use a system like yours!
ReplyDeleteMy husband has asked me to gather up all of our passwords into one spot and I too, thought of a notebook or address book....but still have not completed the task...the index cards seem like a much better idea!
ReplyDeleteI see a run to the dollar store in my near future!
Thanks!
I've been thinking about my ever-growing password collection. I like how you organized it. I used to never write them down for fear that someone would find them. Then I tried making them all the same-- but some have different requirements for the user name and passwords. So now I usually have to try a couple different before I get the right one. lol I'm going to get me some colorful 3x5 cards and get organized.
ReplyDeleteI love what your blog is about. The name and description have certainly caught my eye.
Great tip! Right now I have Norton Internet Security and it saves all of my logins into a file, and that file is backed up in case my computer crashes, but I WILL be doing this if I ever switch to a different Antivirus Software! THANKS FOR THE TIP! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat tip! I'll have to get rid of my scraps of paper and do this instead!
ReplyDeleteGood tip!!! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I have been trying to think of a way to organize passwords and this would work. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Thanks!
