The topic for this week, as posed by MomDot.com, is 6 things you love or hate about the ocean. By the time you finish reading my list, you'll be convinced that I'm totally weird. :)
I've been a Jersey Girl for my whole life, and like most New Jerseyans, I live within an hour's drive of the beach. My family and I go "down the shore," as we say here, once a year. These are the things I love and don't love about the ocean and the beach:
1. I don't like having Sand in my hair, shoes, car, and everywhere else: Even when I wasn't the one who had to clean it up, I didn't like that.
2. I don't like Sunburn: I get sunburned just thinking about sun! When I was a teen I had such a bad sunburn that I had chills and vomiting. It's a vivid memory, but not one that makes me want to go to the beach.
3. I love Salt water taffy: Peppermint, chocolate, or banana, please. Just don't tell my dentist.
4. I don't like Seasickness: I don't always get motion sickness, but when I have, it's always been on the ocean.
5. I love the Sentiment: My husband and I went to the boardwalk on one of our first dates. The memory is very sweet--and not just because of the cotton candy.
6. I love the Scenic view: Despite all of this, I think the ocean is absolutely beautiful. When I went to California for a training class, I made a point of getting to the beach so I could see the Pacific Ocean. I'm drawn to see the water, if not to set foot on the sand.

I forgot to put the view on my list. I love a good beach sunset.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the Scenic view and Sentiment. I love the way you used words with the same letter.
ReplyDeleteHaving just returned from vacation at the ocean I can echo all these things you just listed except the salt water taffy. Don't think I've ever tried it in my life! :) It's funny, but the whole 5 days we were there, I never even walked to the beach at all...though we were just one block away! We boated on the intercoastal Waterway. But my kiddos loved going to the beach with Grandmom. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the sand, but I still love the ocean. I haven't had Salt Water taffy in forever; I had actually forgotten that it existed. Maybe I'll get some when we go to the beach next week. Thanks for reminding me.
ReplyDeletefabulous list!! I love sea water taffy also and I also burn easily. VERY, very easily!
ReplyDeleteOkay I have never equated salt water taffy with the ocean?? Is that a big thing in the US?
ReplyDeleteI've had sun poisoning, too. It sucks!
ReplyDelete@Lori E: Legend has it that salt water taffy was accidentally invented by a candy-store owner whose store (on the Atlantic City, NJ, boardwalk) was flooded with seawater. I always associate it with the beach and boardwalk. If you like, you can read more about the legend and the history at Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saltwater_taffy )and the Fralinger's Candy website ( http://www.seashoretaffy.com/history.asp )
ReplyDeleteI get sunburnt so easily too. Could be why most of my beach memories are so miserable!
ReplyDeleteAHHH, I agree - Saltwater taffy - mmmmmmm, yet I hate the salt water in general! Great list!
ReplyDeleteOoh.. I love saltwater taffy and scenic views, too!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting me earlier in the week!
I love watching salt water taffy being pulled - almost as much as I love eating it!
ReplyDeleteI so can relate to the sea sickness motion thingy I had a rough experience once thanks for sharing
